12/16/02 - Houston trades Kenny Thomas ($1,557,683) to Philly and a 2nd round pick ($0) to Denver. Philly trades Art Long ($587,435 minimum), Mark Bryant ($1,030,000 minimum) and a future 1st rd pick to Denver. Denver trades James Posey ($1,723,606).

Houston: Posey fits within the 15% rule, No TPE.

Denver: Could have accepted both Lang and Bryant with the MAPE and received a TPE for Posey’s salary. TPE = $1,723,606.

Philly: Accepted Thomas within the 15% rule of Bryant and Long’s combined salaries. No TPE.

10/25/02 - Chicago trades a future pick ($0) to San Antonio for Erick Barkley ($682,500) and cash.

Chicago had a $590,850 TPE from the Jalen Rose trade last season. With the 100K leeway, they were just barely able to use it to accept Barkley’s contract. Their TPE is now extinguished.San Antonio traded Barkley for nothing, they receive a TPE worth $682,500.

Total TPE for San Antonio: $1,337,370 + $682,500 = $2,019,870

10/24/02 - Washington trades Chris Whitney ($3,000,000) to the Nuggets for George McCloud ($2,600,000)

Washington has about $.9mil in TPE’s available, but they aren’t enough to be used in this deal. Because they traded Whitney for McCloud, one-for-one, the difference between the two salaries could net them a $400K TPE, but according to sources, they don't have a $400K TPE listed. Therefore it is assumed that they turned down the TPE.The Nuggets received more than they sent, no TPE

10/3/02 - Detroit trades Menk Batere ($512,435 min) to the Spurs for a 2003 2nd round pick ($0).

No TPE for the Spurs.

The Pistons receive Bateer’s salary as a TPE $512,435.Total combined TPE’s for the Pistons: $630,587 + $1,820,520 + $512,435 = $2,963,542

10/1/02 - Detroit trades Rodney White ($1,820,520) to DEN for Don Reid ($1,221,000) and Menk Bateer ($512,435 Min) and a 1st rd pick from Mil via Denver ($0)

Detroit has a $1,593,152 TPE from the Stackhouse trade but they apparently chose to not use it. According to sources, the Pistons still have that TPE in tact after this trade... so it is assumed that they accepted Reid and Bateer against White's salary. No TPE.

Denver has to combine Reid and Bateer to accept White. No TPE.

9/26/02 - Cavs trade Lammond Murray ($4,125,000) and a future 2nd round pick ($0) to Toronto for Yogi Stewart ($4,160,000) and a future 1st round pick ($0)

With the players in a one-for-one swap and so close in salary, there is no TPE.

9/17/02 - Cavs trade a future 2nd round pick ($0) to the Suns for Milt Palacio (750,000 / 807,500).

(Note: Palacio signed with BOS to a contract w/ team based incentives. The 02-03 salary while with BOS was listed @ $750K. Once treaded to PHX, his salary was listed @ $807,500. Later, PHX traded Palacio to CLE. It is assumed that Palacio’s team incentives are now "unlikely" and his salary W/ CLE is now back at $750K.)Cleveland used their $900K TPE to accept Palacio’s $750K incoming salary. Their TPE is now gone (with only $150K remaining, it is useless).Phoenix traded Palacio for a pick, so they receive Palacio’s outgoing salary in TPE… $807,500

9/11/02 - Pistons trade Stackhouse ($6,375,000), Varda ($512,435 min) and Cardinal ($587,435 min) to the Wizards for Hamilton ($2,681,783), Davis ($2,687,500) and Simmons ($512,435 min).

The Wizards had to combine Hamilton, Davis and Simmons in order to get Stackhouse. They gain no TPE in this trade. They receive Cardinal with the MAPE. They had to use their 1,418,400 TPE from the C. Alexander trade earlier in the summer to accept Varda because he was not a minimum salary player (he was signed with cap room, not the exception). Their TPE is now decreased to $905,965.The Pistons could come away with 2 separate TPE's in this trade. They are trading Stack for Hamilton and Davis. They are receiving the difference as a TPE. They can trade Cardinal for the MAPE and Varda for Washington’s TPE and receive a TPE for each. Difference between Stack and Rip/Davis = $1,005,717 ; TPE for Cardinal = $587,435 total TPE from this trade = $ 1,593,152

9/10/02 - Kings trade Cleaves ($1,441,440) to Cleveland for Jumaine Jones (1,419,026)

Trade Rescinded on 9/17 because of Cleaves failing his physical

Sacto had a 1.03mil TPE from last year's cleves trade which expired on 9/9. the TPE is too small to be used in this deal, so it is definitely expired.

Cle had a 900K TPE which could not be used in this deal.

with the players in a one-for-one swap and so close in salary, there is no TPE.

8/6/02 - Sixers trade Mutombo ($16,105,206) to New Jersey for Van Horn ($12,072,500) and MacCulloch ($4,991,800)

For Philly, they are taking back more salary for Mutombo, so no TPE.

For NJ, they have to combine both Mac and KVH to accept Deke. No TPE.

8/5/02 - Spurs trade Antonio Daniels ($3,375,000) Amal McCaskill ($699,935 - minimum) and Charles Smith ($637,435-minimum) to Portland for Steve Kerr ($2,625,000) and Erick Barkley ($682,500) and a future 2nd rd pick ($0)

Portland has a $1.32mil TPE available, but it is not needed. They can accept McCaskill and Smith with the MAPE. There is only a $70K difference between Daniels and Kerr + Barkley, so there would be no TPE that way.

San Antonio would probably use Daniels to receive Kerr and take a TPE for the difference ($750,000). They use Smith to receive Barkley, no TPE there. Then they could send McCaskill as a MAPE player and receive his salary ($699,935) as a TPE. Total TPE: $750,000 + $699,935 = $1,449,935.

8/2/02 - The Bucks traded Glenn Robinson ($9860000) to Atlanta for Toni Kukoc ($8,050,000), Leon Smith ($512,435 - minimum) and a future 1st rounder ($0)

Milwaukee already has a 4.65mil TPE but they didn’t need it. Smith could have been accepted with the MAPE which would have given MIL a 1.81mil TPE.Atlanta can’t accept Robinson without combining Smith and Kukoc… no TPE.

8/1/02 - Magic trade Don Reid ($1,100,000) and a future 1st ($0) to Denver for a Future 2nd ($0)

Denver used their $1.18mil TPE from the Lafrentz/Howard trade to accept Reid’s $1,100,000 incoming salary. Their TPE is now gone.Orlando traded Reid for a pick so they gain a TPE for his outgoing salary worth $1,100,000. When added to their existing TPE, they have $2.0 mil in TPE’s.

7/30/02 - Clippers trade Darius miles ($3,267,960) and Harold Jamison ($650,000) to Cleveland for Andre Miller ($1,934,520) and Braynt Stith ($2,000,000)

The trade works for the Cavs as a straight 2-for-2 swap. But he Cavs have a $900K TPE which could be used to accept Jamison. If they do that, they would have to combine both Miller and Stith to get Miles, so they would not gain any TPE by doing so. I’m guessing Cleveland did not use their TPE on this trade.. The Clippers have to combine both Jamison and Miles to accept both Miller and Stith. The salaries are just far enough apart that no 1-for-1 or 1-for-2 swaps can be done. No TPE

7/22/02 - Celtics trade Kenny Anderson ($9,185,000), Vitaly Potapenko ($5,238,750), and Joseph Forte ($1,009,920) to Seattle for Vin Baker ($12,375,000) and Shammond Williams ($2,000,000).

Boston could have used Anderson and Potapenko’s salary to receive Baker and Williams. This would leave Forte being traded for nothing. Boston received TPE worth $1,009,920.Seattle had to combine Baker and Williams to receive Anderson, Pot and Forte. No TPE for them.

6/25/02 - Wizards trade Courtney Alexander ($1,418,400) to the hornets for the #17 pick in the draft ($0)

The hornets used their $1,944,855 TPE from the coleman trade to accept alexander’s salary. Their TPE is now decreased to $526,455.By trading Alexander for a pick, the wiz now get a TPE worth 1,418,400.TPE affected on 9/11/02. See above.

6/26/02 - Knicks trade Camby ($7,300,000), Mark Jackson ($3,860,000) & #7 pick ($0) to Denver for McDyess (11,700,000) #25 pick ($0) and a future pick ($0).

Looks like the only way this could be done by NY is by combining Camby and Jaxon to get McDyess. No DPE.

The Nugs have a DPE from last year, but not enough to accept jaxon. They are taking more than McDyess in return so no DPE.

6/26/02 - Lakers trade Hunter ($3,425,760) and #27 ($0) to Toronto for T. Murray ($3,400,000) and #20 ($0)

both teams had TPE’s but neither are large enough to accept Hunter or Murray.Salaries are too close between Hunter and Murray... no TPE for either team.

6/26/02 - Sixers trade Speedy Claxton ($1,006,200) to the Spurs for Mark Bryant ($1,000,000 - min) #26 ($0) and # 57 ($0).

San Antonio: outgoing salary is so close, no TPE for them.

Philly could have accepted Bryant with the MAPE which would give them a TPE for Claxton's salary... but sources say there is no TPE listed for the Sixers. It must be assumed that they accepted Bryant under the 15% rule and decided against the TPE.

6/26/02 - Memphis trades Nick Anderson ($5,401,906) and #46 ($0) to Cleveland for Wes Person ($6,300,000)

FYI: Person’s salary fits within the 15% rule by only $10KMemphis is accepting more than they send out, so no TPE.

Cleveland receives 900K less, so they get a TPE worth $898,094

The rest of the draft day trades and the June 28th Memphis/San Antonio trade only involved picks, so no TPE’s for any of them.

2001-02 recap

Out of all the trades, we were on the mark for most of them. If we had calculated with the BYC values of some of the players, we would have been almost 100%. The only one i don’t get is the Milwaukee exception of 1,125,400 (see the one in red below)

TPE’s According to the NBAPA:

As Of 4/30/02(in bold)

Charlotte: 1944855 : exp 10-25-02 (Coleman to Philly trade)

Realgm said: "The optimal situation for Charlotte would be to accept Porter as a minimum contract and Trade Coleman for Lynch, Moiso and Traylor. This would give them a TPE of $1,944,855"

Indiana: 332817 : exp 2-19-03 (Rose & Best trade)

Chicago: 590850 : exp 2-19-03 (Rose & Best trade)

RealGM didn’t break down this trade, but if we did it would have looked like this:

Indiana: Chicago:

Best (3,375,000) Mercer (6,750,000)

Rose (10,865,250) (8,148,938 BYC) Artest (1,241,760)

Richardson (332,817) Miller (4,400,000) (5,090,000 w/ TK)

2nd round pick (0) Ollie (590,850)

In order to accept Best and Rose, the Bulls will have to combine Mercer, Artest and Miller. The Pacers will also have to combine Best and Rose to accept Mercer, Miller and Artest. This leaves Ollie and Richardson as non-simultaneous… and since they are minimum salary players, the bulls receive a TPE of 590850 for Ollie and the pacers receive a TPE of 332817 for Richardson.

Dallas: 927360 : exp 2-21-03 (LaFrentz trade)

Denver: 1177610 : exp 2-21-03 (LaFrentz trade)

RealGM didn’t break this trade down either, but if we did…

Dallas: Denver:

Howard (18,750,000) LaFrentz (3,755,142)

Hardaway (3,360,390) Van Exel (10,164,642)

Harvey (927,360) A.Johnson (4,538,000)

1st rd pick (0) A-Wahad (5,062,500)

Cash

It looks like the Mavs accepted all 4 Denver players by combining Howard & Hardaway and left Harvey as non-simultaneous. Dallas gets a TPE of 927360 for him.

Denver combined Lafrentz, Van Exel and Abdul-Wahad to accept Howard and Harvey. They then traded Johnson for Hardaway straight up, to get the difference in TPE: 1,177,610

LA Lakers: 1764247 ; exp 6-27-02 (Hunter trade)

RealGM said:

"Both teams were over the cap, so the Lakers had to use their TPE to accept Hunter’s salary. They use $2,975,760 of their $3,200,000 TPE leaving $224,240.

Since Hunter was accepted as part of an earlier trade, the Lakers are giving Foster away for nothing and receive his $1,764,247 salary as TPE."

Memphis: 1250000: exp 7/18/02 (Abdur-Rahim trade)

Realgm said:

"By separating Abdur-Rahim and Tinsley into two separate deals, Memphis can get a TPE for the difference in salaries. MEM receives a $1,250,000 TPE"

MIAMI: 3360390 : exp 8/22/02 (Hardaway trade)

Realgm said:

"Dallas used their entire TPE (including the $100k leeway) to accept Hardaway’s salary. Miami trades Hardaway for a draft pick so they receive all of Hardaway’s salary as a TPE. Miami receives a $3,360,390 TPE."

Milwaukee: 4650000 : exp 10/22/02 (Willis/Williams trade)

Realgm said: If they Accept Rado as part of their existing TPE, it will be reduced to $1,451,160. But by trading Williams for Willis they would receive the difference in salaries ($1,650,000) as a new TPE. Milwaukee is giving Willis away for a 2nd round pick so they receive Willis’ salary as a TPE. Milwaukee gains a $3,000,000 TPE with this trade.

3,000,000 + 1,650,000 = 4,650,000

Milwaukee: 1125400 : exp? (no expiration date given) (possibly the Hunter trade?)

This one is a mystery: Hunter’s salary at the time of the trade was about 2,400,000. foster’s was 1,764,247. the difference is only $635,753.

The way the exceptions list is configured in the NBAPA doc, they use one column to list both TPE and DPE’s. this $1,125,400 exception is listed in that column with no expiration date… So it could be either a TPE or a DPE. Anyone have any idea how Milwaukee could have a TPE or DPE worth 1.1254 mil?

Orlando: 821150 ; exp 6/27/02 (doleac trade)

Realgm said: By trading Doleac for a draft pick, Orlando gains a $1,452,000 TPE. But after the haywood-for-profit trade we said: The only way I see this working is by Orlando using their TPE to accept Profit. This lowers their TPE (gained in the Doleac Trade) from $1,452,000 to $821,150.

Orlando: 900000 : no exp. (Outlaw / Bucheler trade?)

Orlando sent Outlaw (6mil) and a future 1st to receive Buechler (3.6mil) and the right to swap 2nds with LA. Outlaw’s "pre-kicker" salary is less than Buechler’s so they get a TPE. Orlando received a $2,400,000 TPE.

We missed the fact that outlaw was a BYC player. his BYC value was 4.5mil.

4.5mil - 3.6mil = 900,000

Portland: 1500000 : exp 7/20/02 (Anthony trade)

RealGM said: Chicago used cap room to accept Anthony’s salary. Portland received a $3,000,000 TPE.

We later figured that Anthony was a BYC player and his 1.5mil BYC value = the new TPE.

Portland: 1320000 ; exp: 10/29/02(Perdue trade)

Realgm said: Portland traded Perdue for an unsigned pick. They get Perdue’s salary as a TPE. The Blazers receive a $1,320,000 TPE.

Toronto: 1483461 ; Exp: 10/28/02 (Gatling/Skinner/MacLean trade)

Realgm said: Toronto Traded Skinner for MacLean. They could have done a straight 1-for-1 trade, but media reports say they received a TPE in this trade, so they must have accepted Mac as a minimum contract, and they received all of Skinner’s salary as a TPE. Toronto receives a $1,483,461 TPE.
